End of October and the time changes, the clocks move an hour and as it has been said for many years we can sleep an our longer, at least for one day. Spring forward, fall back.

And the days are getting shorter regardless how we set ou clocks.

When I was a child I thought the days would literally become shorter when adults talked about the light hours becoming less in winter. To me it meant we did not have 24 hours in a day anymore, but where would these hours then disappear to?

As young people we listen to adults and the sentences they speak are the truth. Even jokes and sarcasm and things they really do not mean, for young ones it is real.

Many people change and bring that childhood judgment into adult life, being conditioned as grown ups, based on decisions often made before turning 2-digits of age.

Regardless what we ourselves heard when we were children we need to show opportunity and possibility not only to young people but to all people.

And opportunity can come in the form of laughter.

Unravel the self-expression that was squashed as a child, and find laughter and play in every day, that is really what we do with Laughter Yoga.

The thing is that we get caught in our own postures and little dramas we play out because we add so much meaning to everything.

This week I did a real ‘Mikkelsen’. “What is a ‘Mikkelsen?” You may wonder.

A ‘Mikkelsen’ is a fall that occurs for no apparent reason, not even because an obstacle was in the way of proper walking.

My foot slipped on the wet grond, I hit my forehead and scratched my nose on a metal drain pipe before scraping my cheek across the brickwall and dropping onto Buzz’ dog lead so he got all tied down on the ground. He must have been so confused because it had nothing to do with walking him, this 60kgs Alaskan Malamute wonder.

I lay there on the tiles as a turtle and half laughed half making in-pain noises, then got up and tried to recover myself in a dignified way.

There is no dignified way of getting out of an unapparent fall.

Why am I telling this? Well, for no apparent reason other than to say we all need to take ourselvses less seriously and laugh at our mis-haps because it heals the pain and helps us recover faster.

If nothing else, we laugh and that in itself has many other side effects.

One of them being that we let go of our inhibitions and let our self-expressed self rule!

A great sense of humour and being able to laugh it off goes a long way, until we find a shoulder to cuddle onto and relieve the pain. That needs to be done, too. Where there is laughter there may also be tears and vice versa. This is the balance life brings.

November brings more drizzles and days shorten further so maintaining our up-beat, summer-nature is paramount, keeping the sun-chemicals flowing so we can cope with less light, remembering our own light so we can shine for us and others.

On the topic of our upbringing and those inhibitions and the conditioning we bring into our supposedly grown up life it is safe to say that Laughter Yoga remedies change and helps remove those definitions by replacing them with being present.

When we constantly worry about what other people think, because that is essentially what most of the conditioning from childhood has instigated in us, then we cannot be present.

Try laughing authentically by yourself and you will not even notice that all the thoughts stop maneuvering around as they slide out of your mind and consciousness.

A great way to enable change in the world is to allow yourself to be free and make decisions based on your own views and ideas.

To work with corporate teams and organisations is rewarding in numerous ways and for me it has always been about the real change that happens in that short time we spend together sharing laughter, the group and I.

Catching the spark in someone’s eye, seeing the change in posture, hearing the laughter, exchanging the best moments, and discussing the exercises everyone wants to start doing for themselves and together is touching, moving and inspiring.

There is a multitude of different ideas and take-aways – as many as there are individuals in each group, and this is the change that occur in those minutes og laughing.

The real testament presents itself when teams come back for more laughter!

But even if they don’t, I still hear comments from those one-off workshops years later when we chance-meet and someone says, “I remember your workshop, I still laugh in the mirror”.

It is the valuable legacy of UnitedMind’s work.
